The company was originally established in 1988 when the present Group CEO, Chartered Engineer Tony Jephcott, established a business under the name SES Data Systems as a custom product developer and manufacturer in the niche handheld computing and data capture fields. The company incorporated in 1990, changing its name to Blackroc Systems in 1993 and to Blackroc Technology in 1997.

The business developed a strong core of engineering expertise in AIDC, in addition to developing many original products including Psion's first ever RFID reader. By the early 1990s the company had diversified into the development and production of a range of other handheld products, both as fully integrated units and as peripheral add-ons which had various AIDC capabilities including laser barcode reading, CCD readers, RFID readers, magnetic stripe readers and portable printing devices, many of which the company still produces today.

As at 2010 product development focus is on imaging products such as specialist camera products and recently the company has diversified into the development of very high specification satellite positioning systems incorporating GPS and Glonass technologies.

In 2010 Blackroc is also building an internal software development team giving the Company the capability to produce software applications running on mobile platforms, including web hosted services, thus adding a "whole product" end to end solutions capability to it's portfolio.

Over the years the company has also developed a strong core of professional services associated with the technologies it develops and installs. These include on-site integration and on-going installation support particularly in the area of RFID systems and radio communications such as WiFi.
